LSU gave up five early runs in the first two innings and were unable to overcome the deficit, as Tulane defeated LSU, 7-1, on Prostate Cancer Awareness Night in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field on Tuesday.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Cole McKay (0-1) was charged with the loss for LSU, going 0.2 innings with one run on no hits. J.P. France (2-0) earned the win for the Green Wave, pitching six innings and allowing no runs on four hits.
Collectively, the Tigers used nine pitchers who totaled nine strikeouts and gave up seven hits.
The Tigers dropped to 16-8 on the year, while Tulane improved to 18-7. The Tigers begin a three-game SEC series at Auburn on Friday.
In the top of the first inning with two outs and the bases loaded, McKay issued a walk to score first baseman Grant Witherspoon, giving the Green Wave a 1-0 lead. Right-handed pitcher Collin Strall entered the game in relief to get the final out and strand three runners.
Tulane extended its lead to 3-0 in the second when catcher Jake Rogers singled to left to drive in two runs. Rightfielder Lex Kaplan hit a sac fly to bring in another run for Tulane, and Witherspoon scored on an error from second on the same play, tallying the fifth run of the game for the Green Wave.
Second baseman Jake Willsey added the sixth and final run for Tulane in the eighth with a solo home run to left field.
LSU avoided a shutout in the ninth inning as third baseman Greg Diechmann hit an RBI single to right to score rightfielder Antoine Duplantis.
