LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) – Flood victims staying at the Red Cross shelter inside the Heymann Center will soon have to find other living arrangements as the shelter plans to close its door on Friday.

Red Cross Volunteer, Jill Bode, tells News 10 that the Red Cross is working hand in hand with the local government to turn the Heymann Center back over to them by noon on Friday.

Bode say about 52 flood victims are still living at the shelter, but she says the Red Cross is in the process of planning next steps in the transition for those residents.

“Our goal in any disaster situation is to try to get people back into private dwellings as quickly as possible, for each family that situation is going to look a little bit different, but we will absolutely take care of people and make sure that they have a roof over their head,” said Bode.

When News 10 asked Bode who ultimately makes the decision to close the shelter, she wasn’t quite sure of who makes that decision, but says that there are a lot of different people involved in the situation.
