NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Senator and gubernatorial candidate David Vitter was a passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident in Metairie around noon Friday.

According to John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Vitter was a passenger in a car being driven by a woman from New Orleans. The 2006 Mercedes-Benz struck a 2011 Honda Civic driven by another woman from New Orleans.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Veterans Blvd. and Carrollton Avenue.

Fortunato said that as a result of the accident, the woman in the Civic complained of hand pain, but refused medical attention. The woman driving the Mercedes-Benz was given a citation for improper lane usage.
