An Opelousas woman was arrested after the OGH E.R. alerted the St. Landry parish Sheriff’s Office that the E.R. staff had observed signs of torture on a juvenile. E.R. staff treated the 5 year old child for burns to his hand and torso. The burns appeared to have been caused by a cigarette.
On Jan 17 2015, St. Landry Parish Juvenile Detectives investigated the disturbing injuries. The child, who shall remain unidentified, was interviewed. The concerned father, who had brought the young boy to the E.R., was questioned. After thorough investigation, the child’s mother, identified as 26 year old Jessica Deville, of Christine Rd., Opelousas, was arrested. She was charged with Cruelty to a Juvenile, a crime which carries penalties of up to 10 years at hard labor.
The 5 year old boy is recovering and will reside with his father. The father shall remain unidentified and S.L.S.O. Juvenile Detectives ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Jessica Deville has been released on a bond of $3,500.00 dollars. St. Landry Parish Child Protection Services was notified of the arrest and their investigation is ongoing.
Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz stated… “A crime like this is shocking to the senses. Most of us have raised children of our own and we cannot comprehend intentionally harming an innocent child. Jessica Deville will have time, as she awaits trial, to reflect on her actions. Regarding the 5 year old victim, it is our hope that the young man heals both physically and emotionally.”
