After a rainy spell, it appears the pattern will be changing across the area. While troughing will stay across the eastern U.S., a ridge of high pressure will build across the western 2/3 of the country. This ridge has been producing big heat for the western parts of the country and the scorching temperatures will now move eastbound. A HEAT ADVISORY is in effect for both today and tomorrow from 1pm until 7pm. For this story we will analyze the latest European model from overnight. For Acadiana, it looks like the hottest temperatures will arrive by early next week, but the heat wave will begin as early as the weekend.
For both today and tomorrow, highs will settle in the mid-90s, with heat index values of 103-108 degrees.
EUROPEAN MODEL: SATURDAY

By Saturday, highs will be climbing closer to 95-96 degrees, with the central parts of the state seeing triple digit heat.
EUROPEAN MODEL: SUNDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY

Notice, by Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday–highs will be in the upper 90s with the possibility of seeing triple digit heat in some areas of Acadiana, especially further north. Dewpoints will stay in the 70s across the area, so even with the heat ridge over the area, we won’t get rid of the humidity. With relative humidity values in the 50-60% range, heat index values for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday could be in the 108-115 degree range.

This is very dangerous heat and limited exposure outdoors is recommended. With heat indices exceeding 105 degrees, sunstroke and heat exhaustion become likely, while heat stroke becomes more of a possibility. If you have to be outdoors, take frequent breaks, wear light-colored clothing, use sunscreen to protect yourself from dangerous UV rays, and stay hydrated. On a normal day, it is recommended one should drink eight glass of water per day. This number increases during a heat wave. Also, check on the sensitive groups, such as the elderly or people with medical problems, making sure they have a cool place to stay. Take care of the pets as well! Limit walks to the early or latter parts of the day, and don’t walk your pet on surfaces that can cause burns. Make sure they have the adequate water supply they need as well. THIS PART IS IMPORTANT! PLEASE LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK if you have children. In this type of heat, no one should be left in a hot car for any period of time!
