Breaux Bridge is known as the Crawfish Capital of the World, Scott the Boudin Capital, now St. Martinville is looking for their very own title.
The city of St. Martinville is hoping to be officially known as the “Pepper Capital of the World”.
Being the pepper capital of the world would be a great opportunity for St. Martinville City Hall just to enhance and attract more tourists, officials said.
Mayor-Elect Mel Mitchell says she thinks the title is a great idea because peppers play a large part in the cities economy.
She says, “We have two large pepper industries in St. Martinville that serve and distribute over 25,000,000 gallons of pepper all over the world. Over 100 countries, so that says a lot.”
Every year the city hosts their annual Pepper Festival.
“We have apepper-eating contest, we have many rides for the children and it’s very family oriented,” says Mitchell.
Even with the city’s involvement with peppers, some in Iberia Parish think the title fits better with them since Avery Island is home to Tabasco.
This is not the first time parishes and cities want the same title. The City of Scott faced opposition in their search to be the Boudin Capital of the World. Neighboring towns already claimed the title when the city was looking for approval from the state.
“So as we researched and looked they were not the boudin capital of the world in the legislature’s eyes. But hey had kind of self-proclaimed themselves the Boudin Capital of the World,” explains Scott Mayor Pervis Morrison.
Scott gained its title in 2012, and now St. Martinville waits to hear about its status.
“Hopefully St. Martinville can gain that title because we have the pepper festival pageant also and we have a pepper festival extravaganza. So we have a lot of things with pepper in St. Martinville,” says Mitchell.
The measure has passed the House, now the city waits to hear from the Senate.
