One person is dead after a crash late Tuesday night in St. Landry Parish.

State Police responded to the scene just after 9:30 p.m. on LA Hwy 3043 near National Road.

An initial investigation reveals that the crash happened as Kelwin Cassimere, 41, of Opelousas was driving north on LA Hwy 3043.

Sgt. Jared L. Sandifer says for unknown reasons, Cassimere stopped his vehicle on the roadway partially in both lanes and exited the vehicle.

At the same time, Joseph Stephen, 69, of Opelousas was driving southbound on LA Hwy 3043 and steered right to avoid Cassimere’s stopped vehicle, striking him as he stood in the southbound lane.

Cassimere was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
