Court records say two judges in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, have recused themselves from presiding over the murder trial of a man accused of killing a local sheriff’s deputy.

News outlets report the trial of Jerman Neveaux is now assigned to Pro Tempore Judge William “Chuck” Credo II.

Judge Michael Mentz recused himself Monday because a staff member is related to Michel. Judge Conn Regan didn’t disclose his reasoning for recusing himself.

Neveaux is accused of fatally shooting Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy David Michel Jr. during an altercation in 2016. He was later arrested by deputies, who were filmed beating him during the arrest.

He was indicted that October on charges including first-degree murder. Neveaux is set to appear in court next month.
