UPDATE: 02/15/22 6:06 p.m. Fire crews on Tuesday dealt with a blazing field fire in Rayne during a statewide burn ban.
As of 6 p.m. the fire was under control.
“We walked outside. We didn’t hear anything. We walked outside and saw the field was on fire, and we were scared it would come closer to our house,” Lisa Guidry said.
“Well, I just smelled something from in the house. When I walked outside, I saw smoke heading toward the north. I went to investigate it,” another person Michael Broussard said.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal announced a burn ban because of the dry conditions of the land. They say private burning is only allowed with approval from the local fire department and local government and that violation of this order could result in criminal and civil penalties.
“I went toward where the smoke was coming from, and it was going north, and the fire was going opposite from where my residence is. The wind changed, and the fire started coming my way, and it was on. In about half a minute, it had destroyed the whole field.”
Residents say this is the first time the field was ever on fire and say they are happy no one was injured.
“I’m just thankful no one’s home got destroyed. ”
ORIGINAL POST: RAYNE, La. (KLFY) — A field fire in Rayne is now contained it was ablaze Tuesday afternoon during a state-wide burn ban. The ban went into effect Tuesday morning due to dry conditions.
State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning and Argriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain issued a cease and desist order for all private burning in the state. Any private burning can only be allowed by permission of the local fire department or local government.
It is unclear whether this fire was permitted or not.
