A Breaux Bridge woman has a memory that would put anyone half her age to shame. She stays active and can turn-out a mean recipe from scratch.
Genevieve Dubois Bourque. She’s 91 years old. The St. Martin Parish Council on Aging is where we caught up with her. “They use to call me Vee-Vee; that was my nickname,” says Bourque.
Born July 4th 1926, Genevieve weighed about 3.5 pounds. She says people would tell her that they helped take care of her. “Everyone said they helped take care of me, the ones that lived in Broussard. I have to take their word for it that they did. I guess they did. I’m still here.”
After high school she says she moved to New Orleans and worked for Western Union. “We lived on canal street with an old lady we called Granny. It was a bunch of girls,” says Bourque.
Eventually, Genevieve moved back to Acadiana and got a job in Lafayette working at a bakery. “That bakery shop is still open in Lafayette. I sold 6 cent pies to college kids.”
It was time to get married. The right guy apparently found her, Maxie Bourque. They had three children; Kathy, Mike and Pam. They stayed married 45 years before he passed away. “We went together three months and got married.”
Genevieve says she’s a great cook, preparing her dishes from scratch such as mac and cheese and roux. “You stir it for a while; do it slowly. You got to keep stirring that until it’s the color you like.”
Genevieve still does the things she wants to do. She comes to the center about four days a week and goes to the same hairdresser she’s been going to for 42 years. “My beautician is 82 years old and still doing hair,” adds Bourque.
Genevieve says she has no regrets and life’s been good to her. “I had a good life. I did really what I wanted and I have a lot of good friends.”
