(KLFY) The Lafayette Science Museum will reopen on for a weekend only schedule on April 10.

“Due to the amount of feed back and outreach we are expecting to be very busy,” Museum Director, Kevin Krantz stated.

Professor and Curator at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Geology Museum, Dr. James Martin and a team from the university piece together a 12 foot mammoth skeleton replica.

“What we tried to do is bring dinosaurs and fossils to the kids and the public here in Louisiana,” Dr. Martin stated.

The university’s Geology Museum is located in the science museum.

“The mammoth was the third one of the big three and we got him over here,” Dr. Martin added.

Krantz says fortunately some of the employees are willing to return.

“We have come folks who are familiar with the museum, familiar with the organization and familiar with our friends. The people who love science they know them,” Krantz noted.

The excitement of the reopening is not only taking place inside the museum but outside people are taking notice.

“I have three nieces and two nephews and soon to be a stepson. This is going to be amazing for the summer,” resident Nicole Hebert explained.

“I’m super excited especially with the new things I think they’re offering. This new mammoth thing, I’m super excited about,” resident Dustin Gaspard added.

As the museum works to return to some sense of normalcy, the director says there will be a focus on maintaining COVID-19 safety precautions.

“We can’t let our guard down. We’re going to be on top of keeping things clean here. We are very excited to get our visitors back,” Krantz stated.
