One Acadiana Atmos Energy and the Lafayette Public Library teamed up to host a summer reading program at Alice BoucherElementary School on Monday.

The Lafayette Public Library introduced students to the new Bookmobile and shard information about the summer reading program.

Research shows that reading over the summer helps keep students on track, but that lower income students and those with transportation barriers frequently lack access to books.

In Acadiana, less than half of 3rd graders have mastered grade-level reading and writing content. Mastery of these skills is critical; 75 percent of students who are poor readers in 3rd grade never catch up.

This summer program aims to close help close that gap.
