In all, six tenants and their families were displaced due to the fire. American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the victims.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) UPDATE: The Lafayette Fire Department is praising a neighbor’s heroic efforts to save a woman and her two children from a major fire at a Lafayette apartment Friday afternoon.

According to LFD spokesperson, Alton Trahan, the department was called about 1 p.m. to Victoria Village Apartment at 102 Vanburen Drive.

Fire dispatchers received multiple calls from neighbors reporting the two-story building was on fire. As firefighters approached the area, smoke was seen from Moss Street.

Six fire units with 20 firefighters arrived on scene within 5 minutes, Trahan said. The second floor of the eight unit apartment building was engulfed with flames. Emergency crews were able to control the wind-driven fire within 15 minutes. The fire damaged three apartments while three others sustained only smoke damage.

Fire officials determined the fire originated in the living room of an apartment unit.

“A neighbor, Quinntrell Feist, was outside and heard a woman screaming out of the window. He told her to drop the kids, a 5-year-old and an infant, to him. He caught both children, then their mother from the upstairs window,” Trahan said. “Mr. Feist’s heroic act is commendable. Had he not been there the outcome may have been quite different.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

ORIGINAL: An electrical malfunction is believed to have caused an apartment fire Friday at 102 Vanburen Drive.

The fire remains under investigation, the Lafayette Fire Department said. In total, eight apartment units were destroyed.

Some tenants had to jump from the second floor of the structure to escape the blaze, witnesses told News 10.

Some residents said the building’s windows wouldn’t open so they had to break the glass to escape. They said they have been asking the apartment’s manager to check the smoke detectors.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
