LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- A 19-year-old suspect has been charged in connection with an apparent deliberate vehicle fire.

Lafayette fire investigators have arrested Jason Mejia for intentionally setting fire to a vehicle on Ridge Road on December 16, 2018.

He was charged with simple Arson and booked in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.

The fire was connected to the reported car-jacking on December 14, 2018 that allegedly took place at 100 McDonald Street.

“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the car-jacking did not occur,” LFD spokesman Alton Trahan said. “The alleged victim of the car-jacking fabricated the incident.”

He and the arrested suspect were involved in an alleged physical altercation.

“The arson suspect removed the vehicle from the location of the disturbance and set fire to it.” Trahan said.

The investigation is ongoing. Other arrests are possible, authorities said.
