2nd UPDATE: Two additional arrest have been made in connection with an officer involved shooting Saturday afternoon at a home on Soulier Street at its intersection of Sonny Drive. 34 year old Arthur Veals of Lafayette and 19 year old Malik Charles, also from Lafayette are behind bars. Police say Veals’ was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Cocaine and Charles was arrested on a local Bench Warrant.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Tevin Lewis for Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resisting an Officer and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Police say those warrants will be served upon his release from the hospital. The investigation remains ongoing.
UPDATE: Lafayette police confirm they are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Saturday night near the intersection of Soulier and Sonny Drive.
Police say it happened shortly after 6 pm when they were attempting to serve a warrant on 37 year old Robert Stewart at a nearby home.
Police say when they approached the home one of six people inside attempted to escape…and a foot chase began. Corporal Paul Mouton says Stuart was immediately taken into custody on a city court warrant for OWI and at the time of his arrest was also found to be in possession of a stolen handgun.
Mouton said the individual who ran has been identified as 22 year old Tevin Lewis. Mouton said Lewis removed a handgun from his person during the attempted escape and was shot by a Lafayette police officer. He was then apprehended, handcuffed and transported to an area hospital where he is in stable condition.
The officer in the shooting is now on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
ORIGINAL STORY: A Lafayette police officer shot and wounded a man on Soulier Street at its interesection with Sonny Street just after 6 pm Saturday.
According to Corporal Paul Mouton, the suspect was fleeing from police when the shooting occurred.
Mouton said as the suspect ran he withdrew a handgun from his person forcing the officer to fire at the suspect striking him once. The suspect has been taken to a local hospital and the officer has been transferred to Lafayette Police headquarters to undergo questioning.
