An investigation is underway in Opelousas after a 22-year-old was found dead in the street early Thursday morning.
The man’s body was found near the corner of Statesman Road and Rice Lane.
No suspects and no motive have been found in connection with the early morning shooting, but one resident Teresa Alexander, says she hopes the shooter is found quickly.
“I hope somebody finds out who did this because people lose loved ones every day. Life is too short for all of that,” she says.
Just after 2 o’clock Thursday morning, Opelousas Police got the call.
Chief Martin McLendon of the Opelousas Police Department says, “A motorist was passing by and noticed a black male lying in the street.”
The 22-year-old was identified as John O’Neil Jason of Opelousas.
Police haven’t been able to ID a person of interest of but several individuals have been questioned.
“What we do know is that his last communication was about 1 AM this morning. So he actually communicated with someone and we are in contact with that person”, Chief McLendon said.
Alexander came to the scene of the crime with a close friend of the victim.
While the friend was unable to speak, she made a plea for the end of gun violence.
Chief McLendon says, “Obviously, we’re not pleased that this has occurred but we’re going to continue to work hard to try to bring this to an end and to solve this crime to give the family some closure.”
Jason’s death is the first homicide of the year for the Opelousas police department.
