MARRERO, LA. (WWL) A 5-year-old boy was killed in an accidental shooting Tuesday evening, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Around 6:30 p.m., deputies were called to a home in the 2000 block of Fernando Court in Marrero. According to the JPSO, the 5-year-old boy, identified as Melvin Brady, and his 9-year-old brother were playing in a closet, when they found handgun.
The older brother was handling the gun, when it went off and shot Melvin one time, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies arrived at the home, they found Melvin inside the closet with a gunshot wound to the head, and the semi-automatic handgun lying next to him. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The boys were in the home alone at the time of the shooting, according to the JPSO, and the boys’ mother, 29-year-old Generra Brown was across the street from their home taking care of an elderly neighbor. She called 911 after receiving word from her son about the shooting.
