A 5-year-old girl shot and killed herself while playing with an unsecured handgun.

According to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, the father of a 5-year-old girl reported that his daughter shot herself while playing with a handgun inside a residence on Country Club Drive around 9:44 a.m.

EMS took the girl to the hospital, where she later died.

Detectives said that the handgun was unsecured inside the residence.

The shooting is still under investigation. The sheriff’s office will release additional information as the investigation continues.
