Irma Roberts refuses to allow her age to tie her down.
Being 100 years old gives Irma all the more reason to kick her peppy spirit into full gear.
“I feel alright, honey. I feel alright,” she said with a smile.
In fact, she even recently flew in from Texas to attend the family reunion in Crowley.
She was born in Henderson on March 22, 2018, and that’s where she grew up.
“I have brothers and sisters; and I went to work,” she said. That’s just how it was, Roberts said.
During the Great Depression, providing for the family involved everyone doing their part.
“I went to work at about 11 years old. I’ve been working every since, Roberts said.
She earned a living taking care of children. She says it’s a job she loved.
If they couldn’t pay, she would work at time free of charge.
“I was a babysitter when I was young young. I took care of children about seven years old.”
She’s a mother, a grandmother and a great-grand mother many times over.
“I got three kids. I got three sons I don’t have any daughters,” she said.
The Henderson native says she has no regrets even after a century of living.
“I lived the life I wanted and I’m still doing the same thing I wanted to do,” she said.
For her, there’s been generation after generation of family, of living and sharing advice.
She says she’s willing to pass along some advice to anyone- family or not.
“I’ll sit down and talk to them if they want. I will,” she said. “I’m willing to talk to anybody wanting to talk.”
