Firemen from the Seventh Ward Volunteer Fire Department began battling the blaze just after 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Lieutenant David Hardy says Officer Michael Brewer lives at the house with his wife and four kids.

“Ages of 17 to 23 all four of them still live in the home. So, they’re just trying to get their lives back together, what little bit they have.”

Hardy says brewer was on his way home from spending a few days in the hospital with an illness when he learned that there was nothing left to go home to.

“Getting out of the hospital, trying to recoup from whatever illness he had and on the way he learned, I don’t have anything left. So, he’s got to pick up the pieces.”

Lieutenant Hardy tells KLFY’s Kellie Brown that the outpour of support from the Abbeville community and Acadiana has really been second to none.

“He is saying all kinds of organizations are calling. I think he said he didn’t really get to sleep until 6 o’clock this morning when it finally slowed down.”

According to Lieutenant Hardy, as the blaze started spreading, a Good Samaritan stopped to help.

“A wrecker service that was passing by or whatever, that hooks onto our police unit that was parked at his house and his vehicle that was parked at his house and pulled them away from the house otherwise we would’ve lost that too.”
