Acadia General Hospital is celebrating the completion of its new emergency department.

With state-of-the-art equipment to handle everyday emergencies, the Acadia General Hospital Emergency Department will allow patients to stay here locally and get the care they deserve.

President of Lafayette General Health, David L. Callecod, says, “The vision in 2014 when we partnered with the American Legion here was to create a new facility, and so we’ve invested about $10 million in the facility and what this community really needed was a state-of-the-art emergency department.”

According to Lafayette General Health, construction for the expansion and renovation project broke ground in December of 2017.

The new 7,500 square foot space features nine patient rooms, one trauma room, two triage rooms, two holding rooms, and waiting for 35.

“What’s really exciting is it takes from an old six bay ER with curtains, we’ve increased the capacity here by 150%,” adds Callecod.

CEO of Acadia General Hospital, Joseph Mitchell, says, “We are currently seeing about 1,800 patients a month in an ER that’s fashioned to take care of 600 patients a month, and so you can imagine what kind of problems that has in terms of logistics and the kind of privacy issues that people expect in our emergency room.”

Mitchell says the community helped by contributing about half of the total funding for the expansion.

“This was a $4 million project. It had about a $5.6 million impact on the local community. I think in addition to the hospital jobs, it also created an additional 41 jobs and about another $1.5 million in payroll,” explains Mitchell.

Lafayette General Health says the new emergency department will be open to patients within the next two weeks.
