(The Advertiser)– Acadiana Animal Aid is trying to replace a destroyed vehicle and counting its blessing after a massive crash over the weekend.

Its transport van was carrying two employees and 36 dogs when the late-night wreck occurred on May 6 on Interstate 10 in Texas.  The crash killed two dogs and injured both employees,  Acadiana Animal Aid transport coordinator Jamie Clark said Friday.

“As long as I live, I will never understand how they walked away from it,” Clark told the Advertiser. “The vehicle rolled multiples times and the impact was over 70 miles an hour.”

Four dogs escaped, but three were recovered by volunteers at the scene, she said. A terrier mix named “Joy” is still missing, Clark said.

“She has been spotted,” she said. “I can’t say enough about the Hager family in Wichita Falls. They are still on the ground actively looking for her. They have groups that looking for her every day.”

Good Samaritans, including the Hagers, used a horse trailer to move dozens of dogs to safety that night, Clark said.

Both employees were flown back to Louisiana and released from the hospital the following day.

A GoFundMe.com account has been created to raise money to replace the transport vehicle.

Acadiana Animal Aid transported 1,500 animals last year.

“Although AAA maintained insurance on the van, it is unlikely that we will be able to recover the value needed to purchase a new van in the immediate future without your help,” the agency posted on the fundraiser site.

Wichita Falls’ P.E.T.S. Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic and the Humane Society of Pikes Peak stepped in and cared for the dogs and ensured they made their destination in Colorado.

“The outpouring that we have received has been incredible,” Clark said. The crash has left Acadiana Animal Aid staff and volunteers shaken, she said.  “We don’t think any of us have gone for more than a few hours without shedding tears.”
