LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) The Acadiana Mall closed early Saturday, mall security confirmed with KLFY.

Shoppers and employees were reportedly asked to leave the mall just after 2 p.m.

Lafayette Police said they responded to an initial response of panic by mall employees and customers after mall security closed the mall ahead of schedule.

“With the panic calls, it is our duty to respond to the scene with long rifles drawn,” Corporal Paul Mouton said.

“I think when the sudden shut down happened, it caused everyone to panic and the rumors started,” Mouton said.

He said prior to the closure, there had been no threats or protest or riots.

However, multiple social media accounts said that the mall closed early due to protest rumors, and looting.

One post said the mall was closed due to “riots,” and another post said there allegedly was rioting and looting in Dillards.

Acadiana Mall security did not give a reason for the early shut down.
