The Alabama Crimson Tide’s football equipment truck arrived in Baton Rouge Wednesday loaded with donations from Crimson Tide fans to help out the victims of the devastating floods that struck Baton Rouge, LA, home of Southeastern Conference sister school LSU.
Alabama and LSU are bitter rivals on the football field, and a lot of LSU fans are still mad at Tide Coach Nick Saban for leaving the program in 2004 for an NFL coaching job.
But last week, Saban called on the people of Tuscaloosa, AL, to help out.
“When natural disasters occur, like the catastrophic flooding in Louisiana, football and rivalries take a back seat to providing help to those in need,” Saban said. He recalled the help that poured into Tuscaloosa after a violent tornado smashed the town in 2011.
Fans began bringing practical donations like bottled water, toiletries, food and pet supplies to stations around the city. The first truckload of donations is on the way to Louisiana and the university said there will be more shipments as donations are collected.
The Tide plays LSU in Baton Rouge on Nov. 5 this season in a game that will likely once again have SEC and national championship implications.Earlier this month, SEC rival South Carolina sent trucks of supplies to Louisiana.
LSU did the same for the Gamecocks when massive floods struck their state.
Those wishing to help out monetarily can call 1-800-REDCROSS or text LAFLOODS to 90999 to donate $10.
