Alabama man arrested in Lafayette after yearlong fugitive investigation

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)—An Alabama attempted murder suspect was arrested in Lafayette after a yearlong fugitive investigation, authorities said.

According to a news release, the suspect who was identified as Yonis Monge-Fuentes, 49, was arrested yesterday with the help of the Lafayette city Marshals and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Monge-Fuentes was wanted on outstanding warrants for two counts of attempted murder in Opelika, Alabama.

Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Hamilton said Marshals in Alabama requested assistance with locating the suspect on Sept. 6, and within two days investigators narrowed the scope of the investigation to a cluster of apartments on the 100 block of Township Lane in Lafayette.

Investigators said they observed Monge-Fuentes in the passenger seat of a red pick-up truck traveling northbound on I-49 near I-10. Authorities then initiated a traffic stop and said the suspect was arrested without incident.

“Lafayette is a safer today because of the collective efforts of our local and state law enforcement partners.” Said Western District of Louisiana U.S. Marshal Henry Whitehorn.

Monge-Fuentes will be held in custody in the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office pending extradition back to Opelika, Alabama, according to a news release.
