The tragic shootings that took place in Paris Friday night have affected people all over the world. It’s even affected many people here at home.
A group of Lafayette High School Students looked forward to their trip to Paris all year long.
“We were trying to figure out how to say ‘I don’t speak French a lot’.”” Said Andre Sarrazin, a sophomore at Lafayette High.
Friday morning the long awaited day had finally come.
The group of 9 students and their freshman Teacher, Lindsay Smythe-Douchet were in flight to Atlanta when they heard the horrifying news.
“We were just worrying about our friends in Paris and wondering if we would get to go because we all were really excited.” Said Kayleigh Byrd.
Still holding on to hope the students anxiously waited to board their final flight to Paris.
“They knew that it was big but they kept hope and they kept thinking as long as we can get on the plane.”” Said Lindsay Smythe-Douchet.
They were about to board the plan when they got the news. The trip was officially canceled.
“We were standing in the terminal and Mrs. Smythe picked up her phone and was like this is the school board. She picked it up and said–‘yes sir. That’s all we can do. Yes sir’— and then everyone knew.”” Said Byrd.
After a long day at the airport, the group loaded up and flew back home.
They arrived safely at the Lafayette Regional Airport Friday night around 9 p.m.
Kayleigh Byrd, a junior at Lafayette High School says it was an emotional day for everyone.
“Some people were crying and some were angry.”” Said Byrd.
Although they never made it to Paris, the students say this is a trip they will never forget.
Smythe says they are going to do everything they can to try and reschedule the trip before the end of the year.
