An elderly Jeff Davis Parish couple was killed early Sunday morning in what officials are calling a ‘senseless act’.

It happened at their home on Highway 90 right outside Iowa.

Walter and Darlene Goutreaux were found dead inside of their bedroom.

Officials with the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s office say they had just gotten back from Eucharistic Adoration at their church when they were killed.

News Ten’s Rebeca Marroquin reports.

“Our hearts go out to the family. There again,  there’s people in this world that do very vicious acts and we’re going to try to put those people in jail.”

Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ivy Woods says Walter and Darlene Goutreaux were found dead in their home after a concerned neighbor requested a welfare check.

“Mr. Goutreaux wasn’t answering the phone, he tried several times so he got nervous and called 911. we went out, surveyed the property and noticed the door was kicked in.”

“This is only the third homicide this year for the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, and residents who live in the area were surprised to hear such a tragedy had happened.”

“It’s kinda quiet around here so i wouldn’t expect it.”

“But Sheriff Woods says this double homicide hits close to home since he knew Mr. Goutreaux. Woods explains that when he heard the call for the welfare check, he immediately was concerned.”

“I’ve been knowing Walter for numerous years, I have his personal cellphone so i sent it to my supervisor so he could give him a call to see if it really was going to voicemail. That’s how well I knew Mr. Goutreaux.”
