BEWARE: Scammers looking to capitalize on new Medicare cards being sent

A Medicare card scam has targeted a Breaux Bridge resident.

Daisy Breaux says she was concerned she had not received her new Medicare card.

Just as she was thinking about it, a scammer called her on the phone claiming to conduct a survey to determine if Louisiana residents were receiving their Medicare cards.

She now wants to warn the community of this scam that happened to her.

“They started asking me if my Medicare card had been with an A or a B and then they asked for the last four digits, but they managed to get the rest of it and I realized I had been scammed,” adds Breaux.

News Tens reports, “They had all this information about you?”

“Yeah, they had enough little pieces,” says Breaux.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Medicare has gone through many changes recently, and scammers are taking advantage of that.

Jenn Love, with the Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, says, “Their whole goal is to make their cards more secure, however, scammers are preying on that and they’re calling people claiming that their cards are unsecured, they’re not being delivered, or they have to pay to be delivered.”

Breaux claims the scammer wanted money to provide her with orthopedic braces to help with previous surgeries she had.

Breaux explains, “They will provide back brace, neck brace, ankle braces, shoulder braces, and it won’t cost you a penny.”

“You just have to remember that no government agency including Medicare is going to call you,” adds Love. “If someone calls and they claim they’re from Medicare, just hang up the phone.”

News Ten reports, “This was a scam. Scammers were trying to take advantage of your personal information?”

“Yes, that was to charge Medicare, but what else…what else,” says Breaux.

Breaux says she’s thankful she didn’t give any money to the scammer. She has since contacted Medicare to let them know of the situation.

The Better Business Bureau adds to never give out your personal or banking information to someone over the phone claiming to be with Medicare.
