A black bear has been spotted roaming around South Wood Park and College Park subdivision in New Iberia.
It’s the time of year where bears are looking for food before going into hibernation.
Bear biologist call it hyperphagia, it really just means they are looking for something to eat.
If you spot a bear in your neighborhood you should make sure to bring all pets inside. The bears might look cute and are usually nonaggressive unless provoked, so do not approach the bear.
The sheriffs department says if you see a bear go inside, lock your doors. It’s also a good idea not to overflow garbage containers.
You should try to remove all bird feeders, squirrel feeders, and never leave any type of pet food out overnight.
The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reminds all residents that it is illegal to feed black bears in Louisiana.
