ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) – It was a pretty uneventful Vermilion Parish School Board meeting Wednesday night, until the end of the meeting…
That’s when School Board President Jean Broussard, District E, abruptly announced he was resigning, then hit his gavel and the meeting was over.
He told KLFY it’s due to personal and health reasons.
His resignation will take effect, once approved by the Secretary of State’s Office.
Regarding the ratification of Superintendent Jerome Puyau’s contract:
– The School Board tabled that measure
– Some Board Members want to wait until a represenative from the Attorney General’s Office can speak at next Board meeting.
– As if you recall, when teacher Deyshia Hargrave was escorted out of the meeting in January of 2018…
– A judge recently back in November of 2018, ruled that any action taken at that meeting was “null and void.”
– And at that meeting, the only action that was being discussed was Puyau’s contract and his raise.

“We are hiding things to promote someone’s agenda here. The Attorney General’s Office needs to be present and speak the truth,” said Laura LeBeouf, Vermilion Parish School Board Vice President, District C.
“The defect of that night was how the Board, how the open meeting law was handled. So to ratify, is just to ratify my property rights,” said Jerome Puyau, Superintendent of Vermilion Parish Schools.
The ruling by the judge in November has been appealed by Puyau’s lawyer, Lane Roy.
And the 2 are currently waiting on a decision on that matter.

Puyau says his terms of the contract are “still in place until the judge rules otherwise”
Now to the 4 day school week proposal:
– Superintendent Puyau said it makes no sense.
– For the school/work week to be from Tuesday to Friday.
– Puyau says it has tremendous challenges to implement and with very little savings to the District.
– No vote was taken on the measure.
– It does not appear the motion will be brought before the Board anytime soon.

So HEADS UP PARENTS: School in Vermilion Parish is still in session 5 days a week.
The School Board also passed a motion for a special meeting to be held on May 23, to consider approving a Williams Scholar Academy Charter School in Abbeville.
