It’s no secret starting that  high school can be difficult. New courses, heavier work loads, and the challenge of making new friends can be a lot.

Sydney Davis has been a member of the Jackie Club in Lafayette for two years. She been involved in the smart girls program, and in the junior staff career development program both she says have helped her with her confidence in school.

“I go Lafayette high. I’m a freshman, it’s my first year I was excited,” says Davis. Sydney’s mom wanted her to do something active after school, so she came to the boys and girls club.

She says, “When I first came here I didn’t know anyone. I was scared and I was nervous. After that I met new people and they were really nice.” Now her friends from the club are her classmates and it’s made the first year of high school just a little bit easier.

“Most of the kids that are in high school here go to Lafayette high. So I already know people, so it’s really fun, it’s really cool,” says Davis.

At the club she likes volunteering though the Junior staff program. It’s a program that encourages older members to help around the club especially with the younger club members. Joining that program led her to joining the key club at school. “That helps me even more to meet new people and build my confidence and stuff like that,” says Davis.

Sydney says she was nervous during her first couple of days at the club but everyone welcomed her with open arms. Now she says she more outgoing and gets excited when she get to greet new club members at the Boys and Girls Club.
