OPELOUSAS, La (KLFY) – The Boys and Girls Clubs throughout Acadiana have officially kicked off their summer program and there are all sorts of fun activities for your kids to participate in.
“We provide a fun, safe place for the kids to come,” said Adrian Giron, Opelousas Boys and Girls Club Unit Director, and Giron says the club is expecting a full house as usual.
“We expect the summer months to get to capacity to where we always have it; like up to 200 kids,” said Giron.
Giron says so far parents have steadily been coming in to sign up their kids.
“It’s usually a slow day on the first day,” said Giron.
However, Giron and the volunteer staff are excited to get things into gear.
“We’re looking forward to a fun, safe summer,” said Giron.
Aside from the variety of activities provided for the kids, the staff also has special events and field trips planned, but Giron says the main goal is focusing on five core areas:
- Health/Life Skills
- Education/Career
- The Arts
- Sports/Recreation
- Character/Leadership
First year volunteer, Kaitlin Freeman, is working with the kids in the arts area and says this experience will help her in the long run.
“I really like doing arts and crafts and I’m actually going to school to be a floral designer so this is my trade,” said Freeman.
Freeman says she hopes the kids will take away the art of expression.
“How to just be free with anything they do, and they can do anything they want to if they put their minds to it,” said Freeman.
Overall the program strives to be educational mixed with pleasure.
“We’re going to have fun here, lots of fun,” said Giron.
It’s not too late to get your kids registered for the fun. The fee for all kids to enroll at the Opelousas Boys & Girls Club location is $120.
All locations are open daily from 7:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.
The summer program will run through July 29.
