OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY)- Officers are investigating a shooting that happened at about 4:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Garland Avenue in Opelousas Friday.

Opelousas Police Chief Martin McLendon said two victims were taken to a nearby hospital. The victims are brothers, the chief said.

One suffered non-life threatening injuries and other suffered “significant” wounds.

Gunfire erupted that evening when two groups of men were “involved in a heated confrontation,” the McLendon said.

“The dispute may stem from an ongoing feud between the two groups, and may have been fueled by an assault earlier in the day,” the chief said in a statement Friday.

Two people are in custody and being questioned by detectives. This investigation is ongoing.
