CANKTON, La. (KLFY) – A lightning strike in Cankton caused three battery tanks to catch fire earlier this afternoon.

Officials asked residents living northeast of Savoie Road and LA 93 in Cankton to shelter in place as battery tanks burn in the area.

Affected residents were asked to close all windows and doors and keep children indoors.

Lisa Vidrine, with the St. Landry Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said lightning struck the tanks around 3:30 p.m. No one was injured.

“From the lighting strike, what we can tell at the moment, all four tanks lost their lids. The lids blew off of the tanks themselves. Three of the tanks caught fire. One of them still is in tact, relatively,” Vidrine said.

Multiple fire departments, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, EMS responders and hazmat crews arrived on the scene of the fire. Town officials helped direct traffic away from the area.

The Department of Environmental Quailty was also on the scene testing the air quality in the area and said air was normal.

“Air quality seems to be good, normal around here, and they feel it’s safe to just let it burn out,” Cankton Mayor Kevin Colligan said.

The tanks are part of an oil production plant owned by Brammer Engineering, who were also on scene. Officials said two of the tanks were filled with saltwater and two were filled with crude oil.

“There’s a little bit of residue in the tanks. They’re not sure how much, but it’s just a minimal amount,” Colligan said.

The fire burned out around 7:30 p.m. Officials say the shelter-in-place advisory for the surrounding area has been lifted.
