CANKTON, La. (KLFY) –  Lydia Street in Cankton was hit with heavy rain over the weekend, and flood water left the entire neighborhood under water. For many parts of Acadiana water has already receded, but a Cankton neighborhood is still trying to stay afloat. Bill Bumgardner said heavy flooding like this isn’t unusual.

“We been fighting this for fifteen years. They don’t seem to want to do anything about it.”

Bumgardner said after a big rain the excess water has no place to go.

“The parish could do something about it if they’d clean out all these coulees.”

Danielle Bonnet and her family haven’t been able to do much since the water started to rise. Bonnet has to walk in waist deep water just to get out of the neighborhood. Luckily she says the house is raised, but that doesn’t do much to help protect her car.

“I actually just purchased mine a year ago. It’s full of water from front to back. I’m afraid it’s finished.”he streets behind these homes are even worse.

The streets behind Lydia Street are even worse. In fact, it’s so bad barricades are set up prohibiting travelers, forcing residents to get creative with their commutes. Residents are trying to make the best out of an unfortunate situation, they say it will take three to four days for the water to drain.
