Flooding is always a concern when storms move across Acadiana.
Three years ago today Carencro saw fifteen inches of rain. One local homeowner has taken precautions since then. On March 12th, 2012, William Compton was at work when he heard about the flash flood in Carencro. He came home to $60,000 worth of damage. Compton didn’t have flood insurance at the time but he does now.
Compton says, “I mean the whole house was flooded everything was floating when we came home so everything was just gone we just started all over.”
After months of help from family and friends, Compton was able to repair his home.
He says, “Everybody in the neighborhood pulled together and made something happen. Everybody helped everybody so we pretty much came together as a neighborhood and helped each other out.
Just down the road, the damage to Virginia Campbell’s home is still visible today. She’s lived in the area for more than a decade but had never seen that much flooding. Although Campbell enjoys a little rain, she and Compton hope they’ll never see anything like the flood of 2012 again.
“Just praying that it never happens again, that’s all I can do,” says Compton, “I’ll just enjoy what we have right here, it’s soothing.”
In 2014 a retention pond was completed in hopes of minimizing flooding damage.
