The Chanda Rubin Foundation and step Up Acadiana are teaming for a ‘Back to the 90’s Celebrity Tournament” event.

This fundraising event is to benefit the two non-profits which will allow them to continue their mission of providing opportunity, scholarship and education to the youth of Acadiana.

Step Up Acadiana became a non-profit in 2016. It has grown tremendously by helping people become homeowners, fighting poverty and educating the youth on financial literacy.

Housing Counselor, Dwight Alexander, said Step Up Acadiana is bringing awareness to many things.

“We want to break the poverty cycle. We want to teach generational wealth building,” said Alexander. “We want to educate people on homeownership because it is the biggest purchase of your life.”

Former professional tennis player, Chanda Rubin, opened her foundation in efforts to provide more opportunities for the youth to get active, healthy and disciplined with tennis.

Rubin believes a fundraising event like this will help bring more attention to the sport.

“It’s literally split-second type decisions and you’re kind of having to figure out and you’re having to learn on the fly,” said Rubin. I think tennis for that reason can be such an important part of the different sports we want to introduce our kids to. It’s important to give them different things. Different outlets,” she added.

The festivities will take place at the Oakbourne tennis facility beginning with a Friday evening social from 6:30-8:30, featuring live entertainment by Major Handy and the Louisiana Soul Revue. Saturday, players are invited to a clinic at 10 a.m. hosted by tennis champ, Chanda Rubin before hitting the courts for some doubles action.

Local and national celebrities scheduled to appear are; Chanda Rubin, former tennis champion, Actor Dylan Walsh, Major League Baseball Player Phil Devey, former NFL Quarterback Jake Delhomme, Grammy-winning artist Steve Riley, national recording artist Cupid, Track & Field Olympian Hollis Conway, Miss Louisiana Holli Conway, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Womens’ Tennis Team and more.
