LAPLACE, La. (WWL) — Criminal charges are pending against the driver of the bus at the center of a fatal crash on I-10 Sunday morning.
State Police identified the driver as 37-year-old Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez.
According to State Police, the bus Rodriguez was driving struck a fire truck and multiple other vehicles at the scene of a single-car accident from earlier in the morning.
Two people died in the crash, including St. John District Fire Chief Spencer Chauvin, and over 40 more were injured.
State Police said Rodriguez is an undocumented immigrant and did not have a drivers license.
Rodriguez was driving a bus filled with workers coming from New Orleans to assist with flood relief efforts in Baton Rouge.
