ATLANTA (AP) —Patrick Mahomes was the big winner at NFL Honors on the eve of the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was named The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player after throwing for 50 touchdowns and 5,097 yards. The second-year player led the Chiefs to their first AFC championship game appearance since the 1993 season.

Mahomes received 41 votes from a nationwide panel of media members who regularly cover the league. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees got the other nine in balloting announced at NFL Honors.

This is the fourth time Brees finishes second in MVP voting. This season, the Saints quarterback threw for 32 touchdowns and 3,992 yards. He also broke an NFL record completing 74.4% of his passes.

Mahomes also came away with the AP Offensive Player of the Year award.

In other AP NFL awards:

– Aaron Donald is the Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. The Rams defensive tackle led the NFL with 20 1/2 sacks, the most ever by a player at his position. Donald received 45 first-place votes, 40 more than runner-up Khalil Mack of the Bears.

– Saquon Barkley is The Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns behind the Giants’ weak offensive line.

– Colts linebacker Darius Leonard is the Defensive Rookie of the Year after leading his team in tackles with a franchise-record 163, not including his 13 in a playoff victory at Houston.

– Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is the Comeback Player of the Year in a landslide win over J.J. Watt.

– Matt Nagy is the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bears to a 12-4 record and the NFC North title.
