City officials in Scott are being sworn into office tonight.

Incumbent Police Chief Chad Leger won 83 percent of the vote in November. The mayor’s race however was much closer. Jan-Scott Richard beat the two term incumbent Purvis Morrison by 23 points. He will officially take office tonight.

“It’s overwhelming. It’s humbling to be honored by the people of this community to put their faith and trust in you to lead the way they want you to,” says Richard.

One of his main priorities as he steps into the mayor’s office is drainage.

He says he’d like to implement a comprehensive citywide drainage plan that could be tackled within the first year being in office.

“It will not be the solution to everything. We understand that there is a regional drainage issue in Lafayette Parish and until that is addressed, I’m not sure all of this is going to help completely with flooding but it will at least make a small impact to alleviate some of the pressure in our community itself,” says Richard.

Construction projects are also in the works throughout the city of Scott. “We have some roads coming with the Apollo Road extension.

That’s a huge asset to our community and to the parish. It allows us to expand our economic commerce along that stretch. It also allows us the opportunity to really expand our residential growth which we haven’t seen much of in the last several years,” the new major said.
