On Tuesday, the City-Parish Council voted not to get the Attorney General’s opinion on the issue.
“It’s just to me a political stall tactic, because I mean this document is very thorough,” said Jay Castille, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member.
Heated discussions took place at Tuesday’s City-Parish Council meeting.
Roughly 20 individuals spoke out on whether they were for the Council getting an opinion from Attorney General Jeff Landry, on the clerical errors made in the charter amendment, creating separate City and Parish councils in Lafayette, that voters approved back in December.
“If the resolution fails tonight, Mr. Robideuax are you inclined to ask for the opinion (from AG Office)?” questioned Castille.
“I haven’t decided yet,” said Mayor-President Robideaux.
LCG’s Legal Department has already determined that the errors can be fixed through an ordinance, rather than it having to go back to the voters.
The Council decided an opinion from the AG’s Office was not needed, however, opinions by various member of the Council were made clear.
“I do feel like they’ve (Legal Department) given us a good basis to make a decision on this, and we’ve also got an opinion from the Secretary of State, which somewhat already aligns with the opinion by our Legal Team,” said Nanette Cook, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member.
“It can’t hurt to have another set of eyes, so I seriously believe it can be a serious issue or a non-issue,” said Jared Bellard, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member.
“The reality is, let’s make sure that democracy works,” said Pat Lewis, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member.
“People yall see what this is, and that’s okay, because that’s what it is. And that’s why they call it politics,” said Kenneth Boudreaux, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member.
Still waiting on word for what happened with an ordinance being presented ot the Council, that would fix the precinct error by vote.
