KAPLAN, La (KLFY) – In Vermilion Parish, teachers and staff at Kaplan Elementary School are gearing up for the first day of school once again.
After being flooded out for a little over a month, students will finally return back to campus Wednesday morning.
“Our teachers are super excited to be back and our kids I think are even more excited, they kept on telling us ‘when we going back to our own school,'” said Kaplan Elementary Principal, Andrea Ford.
After taking in six to eight inches of water at the school, Ford says they’re happy to be back.
“We are fortunate that we are able to come back to school so soon,” said Ford. “Four weeks is an extensive amount of time, but we were looking at possibly eight weeks so that time was cut in half.”
Ford says the school was shutdown after floodwaters caused the floors to buckle, all flooring in the entire school had to be replaced.
“We lost classroom libraries, school supplies, and quite a bit of furniture,” said Ford, but what they didn’t lose was their ability to bounce back.
“It wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been,” said Kaplan Elementary teacher, Jessie Leger. “We were fortunate.”
After what teachers call a slighty chaotic last few days of prepping, Leger says they’re ready to hit the ground running.
“It’s going to be all hands on deck,” said Leger. “Everybody that’s available is going to be available. We have a wonderful PTO that’s here and helping out.”
As the students return back to campus after temporarily having class at Kaplan High School for the past month, Ford says they’re ready to get back on the learning curve.
“We have planned to ensure that the transition back here is smooth for our kids,” said Ford.
Classes will resume on Wednesday at Kaplan Elementary School at 7:30 a.m.
