As crime continues to plague the streets of New Iberia, local pastors and community members are rallying once again to help put an end to all the violence.
The corner of Twenty Aprent road and Anne Street is what many residents describe as a melting pot of trouble. Like many areas in New Iberia, crime is flooding the streets and residents, block by block, are crying out for help.
“If we don’t stand for Christ. We going to fall for anything,” said Minister Albert Hill of Zion Christian Fellowship.
“Young kids getting shot up. Families hurting. Crying,” said Patricia Hypolite, a New Iberia resident.
Patricia Hypolite is a three-time cancer patient who’s still fighting a difficult battle.
“It’s like I wake up in the morning and I look on, open my Facebook page and see who’s been shot if I hadn’t gotten it through the night,” said Hypolite.
She’s lived in New Iberia for over 60 years, monitoring the neighborhoods, by wheelchair.
“I’ve seen the streets. I have so many kids out there who come to me for advice. Parents come to me helping them burry kids,’ she added.
That’s what local pastors are trying to change. They’re having a prayer rally for the community.
“I see so much here throughout the community. But you know, you got to bring hope to them. Bring love to them and they need Christ,” said Pastor Charles Banks of Fellowship Full Gospel Ministries.
“PATRICIA: “We march every time it’s a killing. Nobody wants to do anything if it doesn’t affect them and their children,” Hypolite added.
Community members say the town is split from uptown to downtown, causing feud for unnecessary reasons.
“A divided community will always fall, but if we can come together. Psalms 133 say how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity,” said Minister Hill.
Unity is what they seek by marching through the very streets they’re fighting for.
“We need to stop talking about the situation and be about it. Do something about it. That’s what we need,” said Hypolite.
The prayer rally will take place Saturday, April 28th at the corner of Anne Street and Twenty Aprent Road. The rally beings at 2 p.m. and will include guest speakers, food and more.
