Three men have been booked into the Morehouse Parish jail on charges related to the shooting of a dog in a Snapchat video that later went viral on Facebook.
28-year-old Tobias Conway is charged with possession of a firearm.
In the past, he was convicted of armed robbery.
20 year old Niger Madison and 21-year-old Alontae Alford are charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
“I do believe that these cases are getting off too easy,” says animal advocate Lisa Guess.
In the video, Madison and Alford are seen and heard taking turns shooting the dog.
Their charge of aggravated cruelty to animals has a standard punishment.
“The maximum that they could be facing is up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 dollar fine,” says Guess.
The minimum is one-year probation and $5,000 dollar fine.
This case is eerily similar to the ‘Justice for Justice’ case, where two men hung a pitbull from a horse and cut their throat over and over again by a dull knife.
The punishment was three years probation, a $5,000 dollar fine each, and community service.
One of the reasons there could be so many cases of animal cruelty in the state is because for so long and that could be due to a lack of resources in many parishes.
Tim Benoit works for Acadia Parish Animal Control.
Acadia has only three people to work the whole parish.
Some parishes don’t have any.
“They’re angry because they called and I’m not there within the hour, I may not be there within the week,” says Benoit.
Guess says she has heard received concerns from states throughout the U.S. and around the world including Australia.
“They are concerned about Louisiana not upholding our laws in regards to cruelty to our animals,” says Guess.
