LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Tuesday night the Lafayette City-Parish Council approved 2 ordinances which could give both city police officers and employees at LCG a 2% pay raise in the future.

The Council basically voted on a ‘formula’ for the future — meaning the raises will only occur if certain sales tax revenues and property tax revenues are triggered in the City of Lafayette’s general fund

“It feels great. I’m excited for our Department, and for our officers and our employees,” said Chief Aguillard.
Chief Aguillard was pleased with the Council’s decision to implement a 2% pay raise for most of his officers, but on one condiiton.
“When revenues are up by 2%, that would trigger a 2 percent raise for Lafayette Police employees, who work under the ‘Fire and Police Civil Service System,'” said Aguillard.
Before the vote, Sheriff Mark Garber even voiced his support for the raises, even if the ordinance doesn’t have a direct impact on the Sheriff’s Office.
“By providing all of us here in Lafayette law enforcement, the ability to recruit and retain the best and most qualified law enforcement officers in the state,” said Sheriff Garber.
It’s something Lafayette Police are struggling with, maintaining officers in the Department.
“I really believe it’s going to keep our guys here in Lafayette, instead of them having to move out of state to Texas, or to the State Police or anywhere else,” said Cpl. David Stanley, Vice President of the Police Association of Lafayette.
LCG employees will also see the benefits on the majority vote of the Council’s decision.
“Now police and every employee would get the 2% if these triggers happen,” said Jared Bellard, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member for District 5.
“This would send a message to what would we think about our employees across the board, here in LCG,” said Kenneth Boudreaux, Lafayette City-Parish Council Member for District 4.
The Fire Department was not included in the annual 2% pay raises.
That’s because their raises are mandated by the State Legislature.
