LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) – If you haven’t registered for FEMA assistance just yet, then you have until the end of this week to do so. As the deadline approaches, FEMA representatives are encouraging everyone to come in for this last opportunity to get registered.

The disaster recovery center in Lafayette has seen a significant amount of flood victims since opening its doors back in August.

“We are receiving between 60-100 people per day,” said FEMA spokeswoman, Rossyveth Rey.

A huge amount that Rey says is continuing to climb.

“There are over 40,000 people with no home and we are still receiving new people coming,” said Rey.

Rey says with declarations happening on the east coast they want to make sure everyone in the state of Louisiana is taken care.

“We are not leaving Louisiana without any help,” said Rey. “We’re going to stay here, we’re going to keep trying to help everybody.”

So far, Rey says FEMA has spent more than $693,255,000 assisting the state of Louisiana.

If you’re a resident who has received a denial letter from FEMA there could be a few reasons why.

“Home address is not correct, phone number is not one available, or simply the name is not correct, and those little things can make your registration be denied,” said Rey, however, it’s recommended that you file an appeal.

The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is October 13.

The disaster recovery centers will remain open after that date, but only to assist those who are registered applicants.

The deadline for the Shelter at Home program is also October 13.
