Two more town hall meetings were held this Monday on the proposal to create separate city and parish councils in Lafayette.
Council member Jared Bellard of district five and council member William Theriot of district nine held a joint meeting at the South Regional Library.
Council chairman and district one representative, Kevin Naquin, held his town hall meeting at the Scott Event Center.
District 5 and 9 representatives voted no at a council meeting earlier this month on the proposed charter amendment. As of Monday night’s town hall meeting, they have not changed their stance.
During Bellard and Theriot’s meeting, tensions rose, with attendees and council members making it clear where they stood on the proposal.
But it was a different atmosphere at district one’s town hall meeting.
Their focus was mainly on how the parish will be affected if the proposal passes. One of the hot topics? How money would be allocated for fire response to unincorporated areas of the parish.
“It’s giving those volunteer firemen the help they need dearly to protect those people in our unincorporated areas,” said Naquin.
