JENNINGS, La. (KLFY) – Under the lights, DOTD crews are doing a resurfacing project on I-10 in Jeff Davis Parish.

DOTD District 7 Public Information Officer Tammy York said the crews are only working at night when there are fewer cars on the road.

“You’re not going to see those lane closures during your morning commute or during your daytime travel to where you need to go,” York said. “We don’t want to impact the traveling public that way.”

The crews will mill about two inches of surface, repave it, and then lay down OGFC asphalt, which stands for open-graded friction course.

“It allows water to trickle down through the surface and so you’re going to get less of that spray back when you’re traveling so there’s not as much water on that surface,” York said.

Crews began working on the $13 million project in October. It runs 11 miles from Welsh to the Acadia Parish line.

Danielle Miller of Welsh does not appreciate the way the work is being done. She now avoids that section of I-10.

“It’s a hassle, the traffic gets backed up. The rocks get thrown on your windshield and everything. I’ve already had to have mine replaced. It’s horrible,” Miller said.

“There’s been a few concerns about the overlay because of the potential of rocks and things of that nature,” York said. “But at the end of the day this is going to be a great surface for the traveling public for years to come.”

The road work is being done Sundays through Thursdays from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m., Fridays from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m., and Saturdays from 10 p.m. until 10 a.m.

The DOTD said the work should be finished by February 2019.
