LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – A new traffic signal was installed in late February at Westgate Road and Dulles Drive in Scott.
The signal has a flashing yellow arrow to let drivers know they can turn left as long as they yield to oncoming traffic.
“You’ll have a green arrow when you have the right to turn, and the yellow flashing when people are coming the other way but you may have some gaps where you can safely turn,” said Bill Oliver, the DOTD District Administrator.
The DOTD began installing signals with flashing yellow arrows about a year ago. The flashing yellow arrow means “yield and turn with caution.”
“It’s a very much needed safety project,” Oliver said. “We’re going to reduce crashes we figure 10 percent or so.”
The DOTD is installing flashing yellow arrows at 83 intersections in eight parishes. The project will cost $4.5 million.
“There’s a lot of wrecks going on,” said Nick Morrison of Scott. He was speaking at the corner of Cameron and Alfred Streets in Scott which is slated to get one of the new traffic signals.
“You know people getting off from work, they’re tired, so one extra light would really help us out a lot,” he said.
The DOTD said the new signals provide more opportunities for drivers to make a left turn than traditional signals. The end goal is to make the roads safer.
“The traffic and the wrecks should cut down so I’m looking forward to it and I hope everybody else is, too,” Morrison said.
More than half of the new signals have already been activated.
It should take the DOTD about a year to finish installing all of the signals across Acadiana.
