ST. LANDRY, La. (KLFY)-The victim was identified as Magdaleno Prado Marquez of Bunkie.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on LA 182 near Cotton Patch Road.

According to police, the crash claimed the life of an unrestrained passenger.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that 30-year-old Alfredo Segura-Prado of Bunkie was traveling north on LA 182 and while in a left curve in the roadway, the vehicle crossed the centerline into the southbound lane.

Police say his vehicle over-corrected to the right, ran off of the right side of the roadway, and struck a tree as it began to overturn.

A 34-year-old male passenger was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Police say he was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office.

His identity is being withheld at this time pending notification to next of kin, police said.

Prado was not wearing a seat belt and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria for treatment.

Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash and a toxicology sample was taken from Prado and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Prado was arrested for vehicular homicide, careless operation, driving left of center and no seat belt use.  Upon his release from the hospital he will be booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail.

Police say the crash remains under investigation.
